How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause the car key to stop functioning properly. Take a moment before replacing it.
It's a real pain when keys to your car fail and they happen at the most difficult times! There are several ways you can repair broken car keys that don't involve paying for the purchase of a new key.
Dead Key Fob Battery
Modern key fobs let us unlock doors, trunks and tailgates with ease without the need for a car key. Certain key fobs come with an inbuilt key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. These key fobs are powered by a tiny battery. If the battery fails and the key fob stops working, it cannot transmit a signal that can activate the vehicle. Fortunately, there are many ways to repair the problem and get your car operating again.
The first step is to determine if the key fob is actually dead. If it appears to be dead, you will require replacing the batteries. You can do it yourself by disconnecting the fob from its clip, or using a screwdriver with a flat head. Do not apply too much force or you may damage the fob. Also, make sure that you're using a correct type of battery. Most key fobs are the CR2032 3-Volt battery, however certain models may require a different type. You may be able to revive the key fob which isn't dead by moving closer to the car. The majority of key fobs utilize RFID (radio frequency identification), which only works at a short range. The ignition system has to be able detect the signal. If you can move just a few inches closer to your vehicle, it could unlock or even start it.
Many automobile manufacturers have backup systems that can be activated when the key fob's battery is low. Ford, for example, has a slot that is devoted to the key fob. If properly inserted the key fob will activate the engine of the car. Refer to the owner's manual for instructions on finding this slot and how to insert the key fob. Broken Key Ring
The chip in the key fob is the one that communicates with the car's immobilizer system in order to start the engine. The chip could be damaged or there could be programming errors. If this happens your key fob will not be able to transmit the correct identification code, and your car won't start. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell or wear and wear on the contact pads.
Usually the moment the key fob begins to have trouble communicating with the vehicle's immobilizer system and you notice specific warning signs on the dashboard. This could include error messages, flashing lights or the key not locking or unlocking the vehicle. If you see these warnings, contact your local locksmith immediately for key fob replacement or repair.
It is very easy to cause damage to the ring of your keys by applying too much pressure on it, especially when carrying many keys. This can cause the key fob to snap in half this is one of the most frequent causes of car keys breaking. If this happens, you can attempt to use super glue to fix it by applying a small amount the glue to both sides of the split and pressing them in a controlled manner. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs is broken off the tiny key loop on top where it attaches to the keyfob. It's believed to be made of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've drilled a hole, and then wet-sanded it to strengthen it, but I suspect the problem isn't resolved by that.

If the key fob's case is damaged, it's often possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are online kits available however they're only an interim solution. It is more efficient to have it repaired by a professional. Alternately, you may be able to locate a replacement case at a home improvement store or a locksmith. They're unlikely to be as expensive as the new key fob.
